Children’s & Family Dentistry

Research shows that decay in baby teeth increases a child’s risk of decay in their adult teeth, which is why getting children comfortable with regular dental visits from a young age makes a real difference to their long-term oral health.

At Strathalbyn Family Dental, we take a gentle, unhurried approach with every child. We understand that a positive first experience at the dentist can shape how a child feels about dental care for the rest of their life, so we make sure every visit is friendly, calm, and free of pressure.

We see patients of all ages, which means your whole family can attend the same practice. Whether you are bringing in a toddler for their first check-up or a teenager for a routine clean, we are here for every stage.

What to Expect

01

A welcoming start

We understand that some children arrive nervous, particularly if it is their first visit. We take our time with introductions and explain everything in age-appropriate language. The goal is for your child to leave feeling comfortable, not anxious.

02

A thorough and gentle examination

We carefully examine your child’s teeth and gums for signs of decay, gum concerns, and early orthodontic issues, such as crowding, spacing, or bite irregularities.

03

Prevention first

If decay is caught early, treatment is simpler and often avoidable altogether with the right preventive care in place. We will clearly discuss what we found with you and your child and put together a practical plan to keep their teeth healthy going forward.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a Federal Government program that provides funding for basic dental services for eligible children aged 2 to 17. If your child is eligible, their check-up and clean will be bulk billed, meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost for those services.

Eligibility is generally linked to receiving certain government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. You can check your child’s eligibility through Medicare or by calling our practice before your appointment.

For children who are not eligible for the CDBS, our fees are as follows:

If you have private health insurance with extras cover, your fund may cover some or all of the cost. We recommend checking with your fund ahead of your child’s appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend bringing your child in for their first visit around the time their first tooth appears. Early visits are low-key and short, but they help your child get comfortable with the dental environment and give us a chance to spot any concerns early.

For most children, every six months is recommended. Some children with a higher risk of decay may benefit from more frequent visits. We will advise you on the right schedule after your child’s first appointment.

The CDBS is available to children aged 2 to 17 who receive certain government payments, including Family Tax Benefit Part A. Eligibility is assessed by Medicare. If you are unsure whether your child qualifies, contact Medicare directly or call our practice and we can help you check before the appointment.

If your child is not eligible for the CDBS, our fees are $100 for children aged 0 to 6, $150 for ages 7 to 13, and $180 for ages 14 to 17. If you have private health insurance with extras cover, your fund may cover some or all of the cost.

We see this often,  and we are well prepared for it. We take a slow, friendly approach with nervous children, never rushing an appointment or pushing a child to do more than they are comfortable with. Building trust takes time, and we are happy to take it at your child’s pace.

Yes. Strathalbyn Family Dental sees patients of all ages. We can also arrange back-to-back appointments for different family members to make the day easier.

Low-fluoride toothpaste is generally recommended from around 18 months of age, with a switch to a standard fluoride toothpaste around age 6. We will provide age-specific guidance at your child’s appointment, tailored to their individual needs.
